The local government election was the high-water mark of the year. Against all predictions, voter turnout was the highest yet for any local election. Political parties showed that they could fight hard campaigns without disrespecting each other, the electorate or the Constitution.

The LDPHS is a multi-disciplinary project of the Community Law Centre at the University of the Western Cape. We offer high quality applied research, policy analysis and consulting services.
We believe that the role of local government in peace-building, democratization and development in divided, conflict-ridden countries is under-researched. Our primary goal is to support governments, donors, scholars and CSO's to design and implement local governments and other state institutions that can promote peace, development and human security in South Africa and the African region.
